Naturmiljön och viktiga funktioner i en stor del av landets våtmarker, sjöar och vattendrag har påverkats negativt av mänskliga aktiviteter. Genom utdikning, rensning, rätning, sjösänkning och uppförandet av vandringshinder har landskapets förmåga att hålla kvar vatten minskat och livsmiljöerna för arter knutna till vattenmiljöerna försämrats. Länsstyrelsen i Jönköping arbetar med att restaurera vattenmiljöer och/eller hydrologiskt påverkade våtmarks- eller skogsmiljöer till ett mer naturligt tillstånd med målsättningen att gynna ekosystemtjänster som vattenuppehållande förmåga, vattenrening, minskad avgång av klimatgaser och stärkt biologisk mångfald.
